Youth as the Seeds of Ethiopia’s Future
The youth are the seeds of a country’s future, and this is especially true in Ethiopia, Africa’s fastest-growing population. According to the UN Population Division, approximately 70-80% of Ethiopia’s population is under the age of 40. This youthful population has the potential to shape the nation’s future—if they are inspired, prepared, and confident, they can plant the seeds for prosperity for generations to come. However, if they are excluded and disempowered, they will struggle to find hope and escape the cycle of poverty.
A Corrupted and Degraded Education System
Over the past 30 years, the quality of education in Ethiopia has deteriorated, leaving young people ill-prepared for the future.
Rising Unemployment Among College Graduates
The growing scale of unemployment is a major issue, as many young graduates find it difficult to secure meaningful employment.
Negative Perceptions of Youth
The community and previous governments have often held negative views of young people, which has further marginalized them.
Lack of Safe Spaces for Dialogue
There is a significant shortage of environments where young people can safely discuss issues that affect their lives.
Substance Abuse
The increasing prevalence of substance abuse among the youth has devastating consequences on their well-being and future prospects.
These root causes stem from unhealthy attitudes and behaviors exhibited by older generations and society at large towards the younger generation. As a result, the youth are at an increased risk of substance abuse, involvement in violence and conflict, and ultimately, they become a hindering force to the nation’s development.
